At Van Isle Veterinary Hospital, all of our spays and neuters include a pre-anesthetic exam, pre-surgical blood work to assess your cat’s health prior to sedation, IV fluids to maintain good hydration and blood pressure while under anesthetic, a complimentary trace tattoo, nail trim and take-home pain medications. Spaying or neutering your cat is essential to control unwanted pregnancies and to help reduce the overpopulation of strays. Not only is this a responsible thing to do as a pet owner, but it may also help reduce the risks of unwanted behaviours such as spraying or marking and can help to extend life expectancy.
What is spayed or neutered?
Spaying is the surgical procedure by which the ovaries and uterus are surgically removed from female cats and neutering is the removal of the testes from male cats.
When to neuter or spay a cat?
At Van Isle Veterinary Hospital, we recommend spaying or neutering your cat between 4 and 6 months of age. This will help reduce unwanted pregnancies and unwanted behaviours such as roaming and spraying.
What is the procedure to spay or neuter a cat?
All of our spays and neuters start with a pre-surgical exam and pre-surgical bloodwork. Once deemed healthy enough for surgery, cats are sedated and placed on IV fluids prior to going under general anesthetic. Cats will receive pain control during the surgical procedure and will be sent home with additional pain management. This is a day surgery which requires your cat to be admitted to the hospital for approximately 6 to 7 hours.
