Blood Testing

At Van Isle Veterinary Hospital, we offer a wide range of on-site blood tests and laboratory services such as urinalysis, fecals, ear/skin cytology, toxicity testing and fungassays. By having our own in-house laboratory, we do not have to rely on samples making it to the mainland in a timely manner and often have results within a couple hours.

Why are blood tests for dogs important?

Blood tests are important as they can aid your veterinarian in accessing your dog’s overall health. Typically, your veterinarian will recommend a blood test prior to any general anesthetic, to aid in appropriate dosing and prescribing long-term medications and to assess organ function. Blood tests can also be used to detect viral diseases, immune diseases and infections. If your dog is a traveller, blood tests can also be used to determine vaccine titres which may be required for export.

How do I understand the blood test results?

Your veterinarian will interpret the blood values and discuss any significant findings with you. This will help to formulate the best treatment options for your pet.
